Thursday Island, Australia

March 2, 2011

Wis wei (Hey hey!/How are you?)
Local Torres Strait greeting

After sailing the Coral Sea for a day the ship reached
Thursday Island, one of 133 islands amongst the Torres Strait situated between Australia and Papua New Guinea where the Pacific and Indian Oceans meet.

Thursday Island has a population of around 3,500 living on the island covering approx 1.3 square miles

Few places in Australia are quite as remote and while Thursday Island is rich in history as a defense center for Australia in 1880 and once a major pearl diving center, Thursday Island owns it's present day identity as home to the
"most northern pub in Australia"

A new friend made, Reginarz Sabatino, wrote his name for me on the back of gambling stub.  Reginarz shared stories of his travels to the US many years ago and hopes to return someday from his homeland of Thursday Island

A venture to Friday Island for a relaxing day can be arranged from inside one of these shops

Some"signs" reflecting the passionate spirit of the
Torres Strait Islanders

Wanted to swim in the warm ocean water but quickly changed my mind after friends warnings and seeing a "sign" of another kind.......

Instead my inner mermaid was satisfied a different way

The "return home to the source" as seen on Thursday Island

Clocks turned back now 30 minutes and sailing the Arafura Sea to reach Darwin tomorrow, the last stop before leaving Australia and head north to Indonesia.
