Cairns, Australia ~ Great Barrier Reef

February 28, 2011

Have you ever seen a place so inspiring, so otherworldly beautiful that words, even photos cannot do it justice?

Today the captain sailed the ship into Cairns, Australia where we discovered the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, indeed a great natural treasure of the world ~ the richest, most pristine, accessible and versatile marine habitat in the world.  The Great Barrier Reef, when viewed above water as well as under water is a place everybody should see once in their lifetimes to experience for themselves.  We couldn't have asked for better weather with an amazingly calm, lake-like deep gray sea, gray overcast sky (no sunburns!) and water just the right temperature that there wasn't even the hint of shock when one entered.  The Great Barrier Reef ~ a place that I hope everybody can see at least once in their lifetime.  Truly.  Unlike anything I've ever seen before and I will never forget it's lasting image it left on me.  Snorkeling just a few feet above the coral reef with schools of thousands of small blue sardines, fish of every size, shape and color, peacefully swimming among each other and ourselves.  I felt my inner mermaid come out and play.  It seems only the greatest of designers could imagine and create such life form.  There even was "Wally" a 4 - 5 foot long bright blue fish with an extremely large protruding nose that "Finding Nemo" must have been modeled after.  He came gently right up to everybody and seemed to enjoy all the attention and petting he received.   Eight hours at the reef and not a single photo.  Not a one.  This is the only place I've ever seen that I just wanted to take it all in, to experience it with every part of my being rather than observe it through the camera's lens.
