This morning our captain steered the ship around White Island for a up close look
The full Maori name for the island is "Te Puia o Whakaari", meaning The Dramatic Volcano
Named "White Island" by Captain Cook on October 1, 1769 because it always appeared to be in a cloud of white steam
The island is roughly circular, about 1.2 miles in diameter and rises to a height of 1,053 feet above sea level
This is only a peak of a much larger submarine mountain, which rises up to 5,249 feet above the seafloor
Whakaari/White Island is New Zealand's only active marine volcano and perhaps the most accessible on earth
Large colony of birds inhabit the island
